Miosba Homestay – Fam Islands – Raja Ampat

miosba-homestay03

Miosba Homestay located on a sand cay amid crystal clear seas, Miosba is the perfect tropical island hideaway from which to explore the attractions of Penemu and the Fam Islands.

Miosba Homestay has five two room bungalows located in a beachside coconut grove on a low sand cay in the Fam Island group.

The bungalows are built with attention to detail, with walls constructed from lacquered sago palm stems instead of the more common palm leaf thatching.

Each bungalow has a shared verandah and rooms are equipped with mattresses on the floor, pillows, mattress covers and mosquito nets.

Miosba Homestay was brand new when we visited in February 2015 and lot of planned facilities hadn’t been completed yet. Those included tables and chairs and an electricity supply. We were told they’d all be in place by April.

Dining and bathroom facilities are shared by all guests. There’s a beachside dining shelter and a two room, concrete floored bathroom shelter. Bathing and toilet facilities are combined in each room. One features a “hybrid style” toilet (a squat toilet built into a raised concrete plinth). The other has a squat toilet.

Mobile phone reception varied between strong and none during our visit. Not sure if that’s usual, or a temporary network issue. A generator should be in place at Miosba by now to supply electricity during the night.

Miosba Homestay is quite isolated, so you’ll need to bring all the supplies you want during your stay. Bringing a phrasebook would also be a good idea if you don’t speak Bahasa Indonesia, as nobody at Miosba on the day we visited could speak English.

The nearest village is Fam, which is a ten to fifteen minute boat ride away. Basic supplies are available there.

Transport / Getting there

Transport between Waisai and Miosba Homestay costs IDR 3,000,000 each way and takes about two hours in their twin outboard engine speedboat – it’s a long way!  The cost is shared among passengers.

Activities

The sand cays of the Fam Islands make for some amazing beaches and incredibly clear seas. Dominated by casuarina and coconut palms, they’re quite different to the heavily forested islands around Waigeo.

There’s no Birds of Paradise or jungle wildlife on Miosba, but it’s perfect if what you’re looking for is a quiet hideaway with a focus on the marine environment. The famed dive and snorkelling sites of the Fam and Penemu islands are nearby – be sure to bring snorkelling gear!

Piaynemo (Penemu) provides a great day trip, with several great snorkelling sites and the Wayag-like karst island vistas available from the lookout there.

We didn’t see it during our short visit, but there’s also said to be great snorkelling over coral available from Miosba Homestay itself.

Another good day trip might be to combine a visit to Fam village with an excursion to Fam Island’s Yellow Lake where it’s said you can see resident crocodiles.

Miosba can arrange visits and tours as you like, either using its own speedboat or by arranging longboat transport if you want to stick closer to the homestay and keep costs down.
